Carpini

Sometimes the longest journey is the journey to find yourself

Carpini is a feature film faction set in the world of the 13th century when the West was threatened by the Mongols and embroiled in political and religious intrigue

By Stewart McKie

Storyworld

In the middle of the 13th century, the Mongol horde threaten the imperial city of Vienna when they unexpectedly halt their advance and return to their homeland. Their Khan Ogedei has been poisoned, triggering a succession battle that pits the evil usurper BATU and his brothers against TORGINA, the regent queen, and her Shaman TEB. Unfortunately Torgina's son and heir GUYUK has mysteriously disappeared in the West, leaving his mother alone and vulnerable. Back in Europe, warrior monk CARPINI is recalled into the service of POPE INNOCENT IV after he is retired following a high-profile assassination he has carried out. Carpini is sent on a mission to the Mongol court both to find out more about this new deadly enemy and to prevent an alliance with the Pope's political nemesis FREDERICK, The Holy Roman Emperor, who has also sent an assassin ODERIC after Carpini. Carpini is accompanied on his mission by STEPHEN, a young companion monk, who succumbs to the charms of Constantinople concubine and Buddhist teacher PASHMINA. A hazardous journey and character-forming experiences await this party of three road buddies.

Audio Clip

Listen to Batu as he threatens Torgina in Mongolian: Torgina. You know I have the right to take you as my wife. Who else would have you? You are nobody now. You are old. Your husband is dead and your son and heir is lost.

Video Clip

This clip is a student produced act-out of the meeting between naive monk Stephen and worldly happy-hooker Pashmina in the backstreets of Constantinople. This was done an exercise for my MA Screenwriting course at Bournemouth University. It's a light relief scene and the cast dubbed it Carry On Constantinople...
